While its not the best book I've ever come across, its still a pretty interesting read. I love murder mysteries, and this one is worth checking out. In addition, Lovesey has very smooth prose with an even flow that makes the book easy to read.The premise of the story centers around 4 friends that jokingly discuss murder during a bowling get-together. (While the book jacket seems to stress this humorous murder discussion as a critical point in the novel, having read the story, I feel that this introductory discussion simply provides the backdrop for relationships between the main characters of the story with those of the secondary characters. ) Shortly after their disbandment that night, a series of drownings happen around the town that the police intuitively feel are murders. The friends find themselves entangled in the mess as one of the girls coincidentally finds a few of the dead bodies, and one of the guys is under heavy police scrutiny due to his past criminal record. To prove their innocence, the 4 friends strive to discover the murderer while trying to sort out complications among their friendships.
The end of the novel was pretty creepy- which I consider a good thing, given that its a murder mystery. I cant decide if the ending was completely unexpected- but I dont think it was corny or overdone. And while it wasnt a "non-stop page turner", I was pretty engrossed in the story throughout the read.
I was able to finish the novel during the course of a day, and I will probably check out some of his other books in the near future.
Yes, its worth reading.
